stress management
A survey of recent self-help books''The Stress Management Sourcebook,'' by J. Barton Cunningham, Ph.D. (Lowell House hardcover, $27).
Whole forests have been turned into stress-fighting tomes over the past decade, but misinformation persists, says this Canadian expert in stress management and relaxation. By way of introduction, he explains why overwork is not the greatest stressor; that no job is intrinsically more stressful than another; that the style of an organization may contribute as much to stress as individual personality characteristics; and that exercise is not the universal panacea. But if you think you have to make a bunch of lifestyle changes to counteract stress, you may be correct. The key is ''to recognize the complex web that connects stress, diet, exercise and personality,'' Cunningham writes. His book covers all of those, and suggests ways to manage stress created by work and relationships, although in sometimes tedious academic language.
Stress Management
''The Therapy Answer Book,'' by Kathleen J. Papatola, Ph.D. (Fairview paperback, $12.95 in stores or call 1-800-544-8207).
A therapist in St. Paul, Minn., Papatola says she wants to correct her profession's ''failure to educate our patients about what we do and why we do it.'' That's mighty broad turf for any single book. As you might expect, this one is merely schematic about the types of therapy available, what works best for what kind of problems, insurance coverage, treatment goals and so forth. But it may be useful for reassuring the troubled timid and explaining the obvious to the totally clueless.
''Men Are From Cyberspace: The Single Woman's Guide to Flirting, Dating, and Finding Love On-Line,'' by Lisa Skriloff and Jodie Gould (St. Martin's paperback, $11.95).
''If you're savvy, you can weed out the weirdos'' among the folks you meet online, says Sarah. She's one of more than 20 cyberians ages 19 to 63 who share their personal romantic experiences -- good and bad -- in this safety-conscious guide. Explaining how to balance the net's open-door intimacy with the need to maintain personal privacy is important to the authors, but they don't let it get in the way of fun. (That is, of course, assuming you consider the glare of online personals, computer chats to be fun.) While finding the real path to relaxation is always a goal in the background, they point the way to all kinds of sites, including some that serve up an evening's titillation and others populated by seekers of everlasting love. Newbies will find enough online etiquette and shorthand to quiet their nerves and get on with it.
''Enjoy Old Age: A Practical Guide,'' by B.F. Skinner and Margaret E. Vaughan (Norton paperback, $11).
The Harvard psychologist is best remembered for his experiments in conditioning, but he spent 20 years in what we think of as old age and thus became something of an expert in it. Newly reissued in paperback, this book was based on a paper of his that attracted considerable attention at an annual meeting of the American Psychological Association. The year was 1982 -- a time when the baby boomers who lately have become so interested in aging still were reluctant to trust anyone over 30. (Skinner was 78 then; he died in his 86th year, in 1990.) This book has nothing in it about retirement financing or prolonging youthful appearance, the two hot aging topics of the moment. And it has none of the earnest attitude -- that ''we'll be the best old folks ever'' stuff -- that the postwar generation has only started working up. Instead, Skinner writes gracefully -- in everyday English -- about the intellectual challenges of old age: keeping in touch with the world, maintaining clarity of thought, getting along with others, coping with fears of death. ''Old age is rather like another country,'' he writes. ''You will enjoy it more if have prepared yourself before you go.''
''Outdoor Survival Skills,'' by Larry Dean Olsen (Chicago Review Press paperback, $14.95 in stores or call 1-800-888-4741).
Olsen was just 12 when he started living in the Stone Age, and he's made a career of it, though not obsessively: He tans hides and makes his own arrowheads, but also has his own Web site. He's a genius in desert survival -- creating primitive tools, shelter and clothing from next to nothing, and whipping up wilderness replacement meals you'd never (ever!) find at Eatzi's. He has consulted for the Boy Scouts and Hollywood, and co-founded a survival school for troubled kids that's lasted more than 30 years in Arizona's unforgiving Verde River Valley. This sixth edition of his book, first published in 1967, is a classic of its kind. It's lavishly illustrated with color plates of edible plants and photos demonstrating such nearly lost arts as the design of deadfall traps and proper use of the rodent skewer.

Re: The Strike
- Workers at the Jefferson plant went on strike as of noon on Friday, February 28th. They are still on strike, and it is expected to be a long one. Support for the workers has been nothing short of phenomenal. Everybody (especially higher up people in the unions, like members of the International UFCW Union and the AFL/CIO, politicians, etc.) is totally amazed at the support for the workers. Support from other unions was expected, but the support from individuals and other businesses in the area and state has been unbelievable. Just totally unbelievable. Everyone in this area realizes that what Tyson is asking is unfair. As of right now there are no negotiations going on. Many people on this board have gotten the mistaken impression that this strike is about insurance. It is not. Insurance is just one of the ten concessions that Tyson is asking. A wonderful message by George Carlin: The paradox of our time in history is that we have taller buildings but shorter tempers, wider freeways, but narrower viewpoints. We spend more, but have less, we buy more, but enjoy less. We have bigger houses and smaller families, more conveniences, but less time. We have more degrees but less sense, more knowledge, but less judgment, more experts, yet more problems, more medicine, but less wellness. We drink too much, smoke too much, spend too recklessly, laugh too little, drive too fast, get too angry, stay up too late, get up too tired, read too little, watch TV too much, and pray too seldom. We have multiplied our possessions, but reduced our values. We talk too much, love too seldom, and hate too often. We've learned how to make a living, but not a life. But following is my own personal vote for the year's high points: , .New Union Contract: Successful negotiation of a new 3-year contract with the Huntington union (which included both cost savings and significant policy changes). By any standard, Steve Bortel--with assistance from teammates Lyonel Morrison, John Kupiec, Arlene Quails and Tracy Hutson--really hit a home run with this result! .Worker's Compensation Refund: As a result of an overall more aggressive - by: roamer2310 Health & Wellness > Beauty > Children's Nutrition Education for Kids
- For those interested or have a passion for educating kids on health, you might want to look at Nutrition and Kids (www.nutritionandkids.net/10517) -----------More info------------ The Nutrition and Kids 3-D animated CD-ROM game helps kids learn about nutrition and fitness. The game has received endorsements from government leaders including Mayor of Philadelphia's Health and Fitness Czar, Gwen Foster; California Congresswoman Mary Bono; and Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist. More importantly, children as young as 6 or 7 can play the game and teens as old as 15 or 16 can be challenged at the advanced levels. Players must maneuver through each section before proceeding to the next level. According to their age group, they have to pass a final exam given by "The Professor." When they pass the test, they obtain passage into a "secret room." There are prizes that kids may win based on their test results. - Sure do mmi and this flashed me right back to it. Also reminds me of the Martin L King riots. I blame this country's relaxation of immigration laws over the past couple decades for most of what is happening here and in the world now. I would pull citizenship from these people immediately for this civil disobedience. Don't get me wrong. We have freedom of speech in all areas, but when it develops into violence against your fellow man, they would be deported out of the USA in a heartbeat. DON'T TREAD ON US!!!! She says that several of her friends are going to be there, and all of them have been dying to meet me! Sarah tells me that apparently some of her friends are "naughty", although from the way Sarah describes herself, I can't imagine that she'd be hanging around with people who have criminal inclinations. Maybe she's just exaggerating or something. Anyway, Sarah said I'd need to send her $29.95 ASAP, which I'm sure is for pizza and soda for the slumber party. - One word that will best characterize the market in coming weeks and months is RELAXATION. Until now the market has been very tense and defensive. Stocks have closed lower at end of day because many traders don't want to hold overnight positions. Stocks have closed lower on Fridays because many traders don't want to hold weekend positions. Stocks that have had good runs like MCTR did recently have been hammered back down immediately by profit taking because few stocks have generated any profits to take. All of these defensive tactics are going to start to relax now. Runs to the upside will last longer and downdrafts will be shorter and less severe. There will be more up days than down days. The particulars of Iraq war will be known by Monday. The main questions are: 1) How many Iraqis will fight vs. how many will surrender 2) Will Hussein release chemical and bioweapons 3) Will the oil fields be torched. These questions will affect the market next week, but the overall trend will be higher. - How many Iraqis will be slaughtered? No, how many people will be slaughtered, for the fact that it is Iraqis whose brains will be blown out, whose skin will be burned, whose limbs will be severed, doesn't make them any less people. We'll never know how many were crushed, blown apart, left to die long horrible deaths -- we'll only know it happened. It's Saddam's fault, it will be said, when the pain and horror and sorrow of the afflicted poke briefly through the layers of minutia about military hardware and phoney alerts against the "virtual certainty" of retaliatory terrorist attacks, alerts designed to keep Americans in a constant state of apprehension, focused on their own safety and not on the horrors that are being perpetrated in their names. It's Saddam's fault because he could have disarmed, we'll be told by the intelligent who practice casuistry to justify slaughter and by the morons who fall for this and won't tolerate the suggestion that their country is the aggressor, the purveyor, as Martin Lu - by: eddieW37

- Left Ventricular Assist Devices May Improve Heart Function and Lead to Search for New Therapies to Obviate Need for Transplants New Hope for Chronic Heart Failure Patients New York, NY (Dec. 11, 2000) -- Despite the common belief that the massively dilated and dysfunctional hearts of patients with severe end-stage heart failure are irreversibly damaged, recent evidence has shown that the support of these hearts with left ventricular assist devices (LVADs) can lead to normalization of heart structure and improved strength of heart muscle. According to a new study by physician-scientists at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital, published in Circulation, these observations support the concept that LVADs may someday be used as an integral part of new therapeutic approaches to permanently normalize heart function in some patients, thus obviating what would otherwise be a pressing need for heart transplantation. - By reporter Andrea Peyser: I guess soon Syria, Libya, and Iraq will play important roles in the UN. And people wonder why we don't trust the UN. March 19, 2003 -- The Iraqi ambassador hissed the question at me as I approached. "Are you an Israelian Jew?" Muhammad Aldouri demanded. Guess I didn't pass his Semitic litmus test. Within moments, Aldouri dismissed me, a Jew, from his sight, like a weapons inspector. It should come as no surprise that this unsettling confrontation took place yesterday in the delegates' lounge in the House of Weasels on the East River, a place referred to in guidebooks as the United Nations. The headquarters of global tyrant-appeasement evidently serves as a clubhouse in which butchers are celebrated, while, Americans and women who are both, are not wanted. - But among the Muslim countries the proportions are reversed. Only one country--Mali--out of 47 ranks as free, 2 percent of the group. Thirty-eight percent are partly free, and a whopping 60 percent are "not free." The 47 Muslim-majority states, in other words, account for a majority of the world's "not free" states. Moreover, Freedom House also provides a list of the least free nations, based on its meticulous scoring of various kinds of liberty. The "worst of the worst," it calls them. No fewer than 7 out of this rogues' gallery of 10 are predominantly Islamic states--Iraq, Libya, Saudi Arabia, Sudan, Syria, Turkmenistan, and Afghanistan (before the B-52s got there). Only Burma, Cuba, and North Korea rival them in repression. Weighing further against the assumption of a fixed Islamic affinity for repressive governance is Freedom House's striking observation that the state of freedom has deteriorated among the Muslim countries in the last 20 years while freedom has been growing faster than ever all aroun - by: crisismetal Business & Finance > Investments > Sectors > Capital Goods > Aerospace and Defense > BA United 2
- SOARING FUEL COSTS Unhedged on its jet fuel purchases for the entire year, United now sees fuel prices in 2003 19 percent higher than it projected in December, when it filed for bankruptcy. As a result of the higher costs and lower revenues, United would violate its debtor-in-possession financing covenants starting in May 2003, even with temporary wage cuts that are saving $70 million monthly. Following the Sept. 11 attacks, United cut about 20 percent of its work force and 20 percent of its flight schedule, reduced other expenses and tried to restructure its financial obligations. But those efforts could not offset weak revenue, and after the U.S. government denied an application for $1.8 billion in backing for private-sector loans, the airline filed the largest aviation bankruptcy in history on Dec. 9, 2002. From CNN, new study released.
- No new news on RFMD..but did find this. Just copied this from CNN: Biologists said they found male perspiration had a surprisingly beneficial effect on women's moods. It helps reduce stress, induces relaxation and even affects the menstrual cycle. "This suggests there may be much more going on in social settings like singles' bars than meets the eye," said Charles Wysocki, an adjunct professor of animal biology at Penn's School of Veterinary Medicine. In a study to be published in the journal Biology of Reproduction, researchers collected samples from the underarms of men who refrained from using deodorant for four weeks. The extracts were then blended and applied to the upper lips of 18 women, aged 25 to 45. The women rated their moods on a fixed scale for a period of six hours. The findings suggested something in the perspiration brightened their moods and helped them feel less tense. Blood analyses also showed a rise in levels of the reproductive luteinizing hormone that typically surge be - by: the_one_and_only_no_it_all Business & Finance > Investments > Sectors > Technology > Computer Hardware > href="http://messages.yahoo.com/bbs?action=t&type=>f&board=8729061&sid=8729061">SCLD <>dd> href="http://messages.yahoo.com/bbs?action=m&board=>8729061&tid=dncc&mid=49806&sid=8729061">Re: The >Killer Trees
